The Golden Rules

remember the entry on my experience to the cinema? here's a follow-up...

in case you're not aware of the dos and don'ts, here's some tip for you, from someone with credibility.

Code of Conduct
A teen film critic issues his strict rules for considerate behavior during a movie
By Frank Paiva
Special to MSN Movies

Frank Paiva has been writing about movies since he was 12. He will attend New York University as a freshman in the fall.

Most people think going to the movies involves just buying a ticket, eating some popcorn, and sitting in the dark to watch a show. If only things were that simple. There are actually a huge number of unwritten social rules surrounding moviegoing that cover everything from smuggling outside food into the theater to talking during previews. The problem is that not everyone follows these rules, making the already expensive night out at the multiplex emotionally, in addition to financially, draining. And we're not talking about the content on the screen.

Here are my suggestions for basic behavior that should be expected from anyone attending a movie. It's easily split into four basic sections for convenience: Talking, Food, Children and Miscellaneous Problems. Follow them -- or meet the wrath of your fellow moviegoers.

TALKING

My Golden Rule: The only time talking is permitted during a film screening is at a midnight showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," because everyone's seen the movie a million times already and most people are too drunk/crazy to control themselves. To elaborate:

    1. Annoying pre-film ads and trailers are in "no talking" territory in addition to the feature itself. While this may sound harsh, consider that anyone who's spent the first 20 minutes of their theater experience talking isn't likely to stop once a Dreamworks or Warner Bros. logo comes on the screen.

    2. If you've seen the movie before, shut up. I don't care about your opinion. For that matter, if you haven't seen the movie, I don't care what your mother or your roommate thought of it either.

    3. The moment the final credits begin to roll is not the time for you to begin discussing your opinion of the movie. Wait at least until you're outside the auditorium.

    4. Never ever discuss the endings to other movies before the screening. I can't tell you how often this happens.

    5. Do not discuss the film you just saw in between stalls in the bathroom. It could spoil it for someone headed into an upcoming screening; plus no film is important enough to be loudly discussed in a public restroom.

    6. If there are only a few people in the theater, talk very quietly. Talking loudly will force other people to eavesdrop on your conversation in lieu of listening to that horrible theater radio network music.

FOOD

My Golden Rule: If it smells like anything or is larger than a chicken, you don't need to bring it into the movie with you.

    1. If you bring soda from home, at least have the decency to open it before the movie starts. I'm tired of the opening-cans chorus that occurs in the first minute of a movie, caused by sneaky people trying to cheat the system.

    2. If your food from home is wrapped in noisy bags or wrappers, remove it while there's still light available and the noise won't matter. This includes cough drops.

    3. If you drop a food item on the floor, don't eat it. That floor is disgusting. And don't try to get it back during the screening. It really doesn't matter that much.

    4. Napkins are key to keeping your seat and armrests from getting greasy. Be kind to the people who will come after you.

CHILDREN

My Golden Rule: If the film doesn't feature talking animals or Hilary Duff, then it's probably not appropriate for children. Bad parenting is rampant at today's multiplex. Just remember that:

    1. Saying you couldn't find a babysitter and going to the movies anyway is not an excuse. You can rent a movie and watch it at home if you're really so concerned about the safety of your child.

    2. If the film starts after 7, it's not OK to bring your kids. I am shocked by the recent surge of children I'm seeing at movies beginning at 10 or 11 at night.

    3. Your child's comments during the film are not amusing. I don't care if you find them cute. Children are subject to the same non-talking rules as everyone else. All children. Not just everyone else's child. Your child is not that special.

    4. Bringing children to R-rated movies isn't just irresponsible, it's wrong. There's a reason films get these ratings. It's because these films contain things children shouldn't be exposed to or that they can't understand. I'll never forget seeing the Holocaust drama "The Pianist" and having the little boy in front of me remark two-thirds of the way into the movie, "Mommy, I don't understand why he's hiding." Just don't do it.

MISCELLANEOUS

My Golden Rule: Watch out for the elderly. While this may sound ageist, I am consistently amazed by how many of my problems at the multiplex have nothing to do with the stereotypical rowdy teenager or antic child. Age may make you wiser, but that still doesn't mean I care about anything you have to say until after we leave the auditorium. Some other rules (for all ages):

    1. If you know the song being played in a movie, don't you dare sing along to it. When did this become OK? This includes humming.

    2. If you're 20 or 25 minutes late for a movie's starting time and go anyway: Shame on you. You irresponsible people are the reason I'm glad movie tickets prices are so high. It's as if you're being fined for your stupidity and for being inconsiderate. I've never understood why people will pay good money to see 70 minutes of a 90-minute movie.

    3. Cell phones should always be off. Not on a low ring volume. Not on vibrate. It seems so simple, but apparently it's not. I don't care if you're a doctor on call. If you're on call, you can watch a movie at home.

    4. If a movie is playing at a second-run theater, that doesn't make it OK to ignore any of these rules. Just because tickets were only $3 or $4.50 doesn't mean we need to lose our respect for each other.

    5. If you're sick, don't go to the movies. I'm sitting too close to you.

Until next time, enjoy and behave yourself at the movies.

tidak terima hidup gratis

i first came across this phrase when we were at Anton's (original drummer of Sheila On 7) jamming studio in jogja.

the jist of it means you have to work hard for what you want in life for nothing in life is free.

well, i guess people in the company i work in don't believe in such thing...

why?

simple. we're suckers when it comes to lucky draw.

funny huh?

whenever the coompany organized any event, there just have to have a lucky draw session to attract participation from the employees. or else, you can guess for yourself lah...

is it because we love the thrill of waiting for our names to be called as one of those lucky people or is it because we just lurrrve free stuff? come to think of it who doesn't?

even if you say you don't, you know deep, deep down, you actually do like to receive free things. if you don't, by now you would have returned all those presents you received for your i.e. birthdays, anniversaries, wedding etc.

kan?

here kitty, kitty, kitty

went back home yesterday. some stuff to do.

also played with the kittens. their such cute things. very playful and adorable!!!
this is the first time I managed to take their photos...

the mum, Pudding - first born, Arang

the rests of the siblings, Linggam and Abok

ganging up on Abok. norty kittens! - Cookies, my cat. skinny as ever.

the cutest of the kittens, Kapor. coz she's as white as a chalk with a little bit of dirt at the tip of her ears and tail.

banyak kerenah

it's a headache lah arranging a meeting that involves people from the Top Management!

bila sorg boleh, sorg lagi pulak tak dapat attend...

when i managed to get a time when all of them could make it, it'll be too late pulak!

fenin lah!

good or bad?

after long speculations, Malaysia finally decided to unpegged RM to USD.

Do you think this is a smart decision? Honestly, I don't do not know...

My reaction when I heard the news today was this.

I've been thinking of buying an iPod, with the help of a friend in US. With RM no longer pegged, I hope I'm able to buy it cheaper than I've budgeted before...

Hopefully, the RM-USD rate would go down further, so that
(1) I can buy the iPod at a cheaper rate
(2) RM-Pound Sterling goes down too. Then, I'll have enough money to go to Ireland next year (still a long way to go, so much can happen by then)

Let's pray for the best, ok, for my sake! LOL!!!

that's my friend on tv

finally saw Pezal on 8tv last saturday, doing the thing he loves most!

he was covering topic on Malaysia's reality shows i.e malaysian idol, akademi fantasia, etc (which all lack originalities if i may say so but doesn't mean they're all bad). only caught his segment half way through. knowing Pezal, i believe he did a good job on the topic!

though i really think he needs to do something about the dark circles around his eyes coz he's on air a lot.

but, i'm proud to say that he's a friend of mine.

Source: explorace.netmyne.comspeaking of malaysia's reality shows, the only one i think is worthy of my praise (as if it matters!) is the ExploRace. Hats off to all the participants! If I was fit enough (which I'm not), I'd be asking "Where do I sign up?". Who wouldn't want to travel the globe and get an adventour all at the same time, for free!?! Although I think there's room for improvement still...

Source: illusions.tvand the one which i think is a stupid rip-off is Mencari Cinta - come on lah! participating means you're either a desperado (i believe the word is - giler glamer!) or a loser (for not being able to get a date on your own). you know what? when i asked people about this show two words seem to always come up - desperate and poyo. believe me, i'm not making this up. 6 out of 7 says so. the other one person? didn't even know the show existed...

if one of my friends end up in this show, i don't think i'll managed to face/watch them without bursting into laughter first, everytime!!!

ps: hey! heard they might be bringing FearFactor down to Malaysia... not as one of the rip-offs. the actual series and Mr Joe Rogan himself, probably... something like AmazingRace.

pss: Ungu Violet coming soon to cinema near you!

loving couple?

this morning, i saw something that probably, wait - IS, the most disgusting thing ever!

there was this couple standing on the opposite commuter train platform (towards Port Klang). the guy was leaning against the wall, while the girl was in front of him.

just a normal couple, i thought to myself.

then, the girl placed her hands on the guys cheek and squeezed his pimples.
o-k... normal...

seconds later, she removed her hands and then her face was only inches from his. i thought, she's just kissing him. still, common.

but noooo...

instead, she opened her mouth towards where the pimples were and using her teeth, she bit them out one by one.

urgghh!!!!

gross!!!

and, NO! That's not loving, that's just plain disgusting!

puh-leeeez. do it someplace where people can't see!!!

hate n love

in addition to sinner's Annoyingly Annoyed Movie Experience entry, these were the things that irritated me the most during the movie:-

CHOMPING on your popcorn
fyi, 'eating' and 'chomping' are not the same thing.
'chomp' is to chew or bite on noisily: a horse chomping oats.
even the example given (by Yahoo!Education) is related to animals!!!
so, if you're a human being, eat quitely...!

and besides, i came to the movie to hear the actor. not the chomper!

SHAKING your legs
good god!!! can't you sit still???
if i was that 'dumb', i might have thought earthquake had hit KL.

first the 'chomping', then the 'shaking'.

and it was all by the same ONE guy who sat beside me at the movie!
i think he took the wrong turn at the junction.
believe he actually wanted to go to some 'square-dancing' party, but reached the cinema instead... either case, he's a geek! (pun intended!)

urgghh!

hate the guy, but love fantastic 4!

ps to the sinner : Mr Fantastic isn't played by a more handsome looking actor coz i think they were trying to stay true to the Marvel's comic book character. the comic Mr Fantastic is somewhat older looking man... i think Ioan Gruffudd is quite handsome as a matter of fact, despite his gross 'superpowers'.

jom makan

anyone interested?

goss, goss, goss

i lurrrrvvvvve celebrity gossips.

everyday i would go into Yahoo!Entertainment or E!online or any other gossip websites that I could get my hands on to, just to get the latest juice on the celebs!

no... not your bollywood or the local artists... i'm more into the hollywood peeps!

it's fun to read who did what, who ditched who, who hook up with who (i.e. Evangeline Lilly - Kate of Losts - is Hobbit Dominic Monaghan's girlfriend), who gets sued by who...

speaking of which, looks like MJ is going to be heading into the legal battle yet again!

"A financial company specializing in asset acquisition sued Michael Jackson on Monday, saying it is owed $48 million in fees for rescuing the singer's stake in the publishing rights to songs by the Beatles... On behalf of Jackson and his company MJ Publishing Trust, Prescient secured $537 million in financing from Fortress Investment Group LLC, enough for Jackson to pay off the debt and exercise an option to buy the remaining 50 percent of the Beatles library he didn't already own, the lawsuit said." - Yahoo!Music

Money (that's what they want) from him...

Kesian... Hidup susah, mati pun susah!

ps: I also love to look at what the celebs wore to the Red Carpet! At one time they can be classically georgeous, while at another, plain ugly! See for yourself!

Six Signs That it is Time to Move On
1. No money would ever be enough.
2. Nothing you do makes the least bit of difference.
3. You're not learning anything.
4. No one ever talks to you about the future in a positive way.
5. You hate your boss.
6. Who you are at work doesn't relate to the rest of your life.

Sekali Lagi
by Sheila on 7

jika hidup terus berputar, biarlah berputar
akan ada harapan sekali lagi, seperti dulu
kerna hidup terus berputar, biarlah berputar
akan ada harapan sekali lagi, seperti dulu

Manic depressed

Went to watch "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" last night with my colleague...

It wasn't great but ok lah... entertaining. Although, there were only a few number of people in the cinema and some of which walked out in the middle of the show....oh, well! Not sure how the original series' avid followers might find it, but for one who have never seen the show (or even know its existence) i found it to be so-so.

The storyline is ridiculous but some of the underlying messages are somewhat funny and ironically true.

Such as what you might ask? Here's some:
1) The purpose of having a president is only to distract people while the actual xxx proceed with their 'agenda'
2) The president doesn't read what s/he signed. Come to think of it, who does???
3) We always thinks of ourselves as the superior being and most intelligent of all species.
4) The Vogons creature are soooo like the govies people. Read 'the Guide' definition of this creature:

"Though not actually evil, the Vogons are thoroughly vile, Officious, bad-tempered, callous, rude, and unpleasant. They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters."

Speaking of red-tapes, they have all sorts of application forms. They even have one for "Approval to Release the Kidnapper of the President". I wonder how they'd do in an audit???

Casts include martin freeman (the guy from 'the office') as Arthur dent, Mos Def as Ford Prefect (Arthur's alien best friend) et al.

But one I'm dying to mention is Alan Rickman, whom in my opinion did a great job as the voice of Marvin.

Marvin is a new generation of robot, infused with GPP (Genuine People Personalities). A prototype. Unlike the successive generation, which have highly perky personalities, Marvin is chronically depressed. Imagine. A robot. Depressed.

He finds "little job satisfaction in his menial tasks and he's quick to remind others that he won't enjoy them. To be fair, opening doors and fetching things can be a little dreary (Marvin even programmed the doors to sigh every time it opens and closes!) when you have a brain that can compute your personality problems to thirty decimal places, while predicting the weather of an entire planet. As a result of his gloomy disposition, he often worries that he is making those around him miserable as well."

but despite all that, he ends up being the hero!!!

The people who designed and put on the Marvin suit should also be commended. The big head, the lazy walk... it suits Marvin's character!!!

I find myself laughing at Marvin more than the punch lines (if there were any!). oh, but I did laughed hard during the scene where Arthur, Ford and Zaphod gets a slap in the face every time the thought of an idea.

Well, spoilers and reviews aside... in my opinion, you should go to the website to know more about 'the guide'.

"Not that anyone cares what my opinion is anyway" - Marvin

So Long And Thanks For All The Fish
Composed by JOBY TALBOT
H2G2 OST

So long and thanks for all the fish
So sad that it should come to this
We tried to warn you all but oh dear
You may not share our intellect
Which might explain your disrespect
For all the natural wonders that grow around you.
So long, So long, and thanks for all the fish

The world’s about to be destroyed
Theres no point getting all annoyed.
Lie back and let the planet dissolve (around you)
Despite those nets of tuna fleets
We thought that most of you were sweet
Especially tiny tots and your pregnant women.

So long, So long, So long, So long, So long,
So long, So long, So long, So long, So long,
So long, So long, and thanks for all the fish

If I had just one last wish
I would like a tasty fish

If we could just change one thing
We would all have learnt to sing

Come one and all
Man and mammal
Side by side in life’s great gene pool

So long, So long, So long, So long, So long,
So long, So long, So long, So long, So long,
So long, So long, and thanks for all the fish

anyone for food?

had a meeting this morning with our supplier and the department's director.

my manager came up to me before that and asked if i'd order any refreshments.
I simply said, "No".

So, I thought ok, perhaps I could substitute with some mineral water. And I did.

Then, it's 10 am.

My Deputy Director came into the meeting room and asked my manager, "did we order any refreshments?"

for god's sake!

People! people!
you should have had your breakfast by now.
like everyone else does! early in the morning.
you can't be expecting free food everytime you come to a meeting...

i thought we're supposed to save costs?

sheeeshh!!!
