Cost of living in malaysia....Too high?

A good read…

**********************************

The argument from day one is the cost of living in each country (especially UK and Europe) based on what you earn in the respective country and whether the standards are higher than in Malaysia.

I tried to point out that many Malaysians always convert and that is why they say the UK is expensive. In fact, the cost of living is much cheaper than in Malaysia.

In actual fact, Malaysians are being conned because for such a rich and resource rich country, the pay in Malaysia is way too low compared to the cost of living and inflation.

One good example is Singapore. Singaporeans (average) earns around S$3000 to S$4000 and nearly everything is half the price of Malaysia. Eg clothes, computer parts, electronics etc. But the average Malaysian still earns RM$2000 plus and goods are double the price of Singapore.

This is the same as the UK. If you earn around 2000 pounds, you can liken this to the person earning RM$2000 in Malaysia. I give you some examples below. Maybe you can understand.

  1. Good terrace house

  2. It is more or less the same. If you want a house in KL, it would most probably be in Puchong and not Damansara Heights. So your house would be RM$200,000. In UK, you can get a decent new house in Zone 6 (still within the tube) for 200,000 pounds. If non London, you can get a nice house also for less than 200,000 pounds outside London. The same also applies to buying a house in Seremban, Kajang etc. You can buy a nice house for RM200,000 below.

So buying a house is the same for the local and the Malaysian. Renting a place is the same too or maybe cheaper than in Malaysia (I am not sure of this). A 2-bedroom flat in London is about 750 pounds (Zone 2).

500 pounds outside Zone 6 but still able to commute to London. A 2-bedroom house in Nottingham is 450 to 500 pounds. A 3-bedroom house in Belfast is about 300 pounds.

  3. A car

  4. A good Wira is RM$55,000. Most Malaysians have to take 7-year loans and be in debt all the time. If you are earning RM$2000 a month, you take nearly 3 years saving the RM$2000 with not eating at all just to buy a Wira.

In UK, the average local earns about 2000 pounds. He saves 3 months, he can buy outright a good Ford Fiesta or a Vauxhall Corsa without being in debt.

If buying a second hand car, even better. A 1990 Mercedes 190E cost 500 pounds. My 1996 Mercedes E220 cost 2000 pounds. My friend just gave me his 1989 Honda Accord (Auto) for free because he said he could only get 30 pounds for it. I used it for a few months and decided to give it of for free too. That alone speaks for itself.

Even if you are kuli or an office boy, you still can drive a Mercedes or a BM. Yes, kuli's and office boy's get paid quite well. Average temp/office boy in London can earn about 7 to 10 pounds and hour. Overtime is 1.5 times or double. A brick-layer can earn 20 pounds an hour. The same Indon who lays bricks in Malaysia earns RM$50 for the whole day.

Before I became a doctor, I used to be an office boy and I earned near 300 pounds a week working about 70 hours a week. My makan was 30 pounds a week. My rent was 70 pounds a week for a room but I still drove a BMW back then. I bought the 10-year old BMW 3 Series car for 200 pounds. Amazing how an office boy can drive a safe and luxurious car.

  5. Petrol.

  6. For a UK person earning 2000 pounds, 80 pence a litre/gallon is cheaper than RM$1.52 paid in Malaysia. If you don't convert, it is like paying 80 sen a litre in Malaysia

  7. Shopping

  8. 20 pounds (which is 1% of 2000 pounds) can buy you 1 week's worth of groceries in Tesco. RM$100 (which is 10% of RM$2000) can also buy you 1 week's worth of groceries in Giant or Carrefour.

  9. Utility Bills

  10. This is what I pay in UK:-
    1. Virtually non-stop heating the whole day only 20 pounds a month. Only 1% of the 2000 pounds earned)
    2. Electricity, I use my electricity maximum only 20 pounds a month. Only 1% of the 2000 pounds earned)
    3. My water bill also comes to about 20 pounds a month (Only 1% of the 2000 pounds earned)
    4. My internet - I get 2Mbps for about 25 pounds (Bulldog DSL) (Also slightly above 1% of the 2000 pounds earned)
    5. Astro Equivalent (NTL cable or Sky) - 30 pounds per month (Also slightly above 1% of the 2000 pounds earned)

In Malaysia, this is what I used to pay :-
    1. Tenaga Bill comes to RM$200 to RM300 a month with 3 air-cons. This is more than 10% of the RM$2000 earned)
    2. Water (Puas) comes to RM$40 (This is about 2% of the RM$2000 earned)
    3. Astro RM$100 (if you take Chinese package) (This is about 5% of the RM$2000 you earn)
    4. Internet Streamyx 512K RM 88 per month (This is about 5% of RM2000 you earn)

  11. Books

  12. A good book is about 10 to 15 pounds in the UK. This is less than 1% of the 2000 pounds you earn. In Malaysia, you have to spend RM$75 to RM$100 for a decent book in MPH or Kinokuniya in KLCC. This is about 5% of the RM$2000 ringgit you earn.

  13. Education

  14. I think it is about RM$20,000 per year to do a degree in Sunway Monash and about RM$12,000 per year to send your kid to UM, UKM, USM etc. I am not sure about this. But in UK, it is only 3000 pounds a year to send your kid to a great university. That also, the white man still makes a lot of noise because the grants were taken away. Previously, it was virtually free for the English man to send his kid to university but now, since the grant was taken away, he has to spend 3000 pounds per year to send his kid to university and less money to get drunk in the pub. Well, if you are earning RM$2000 ringgit, sending your kid to UM to study is quite difficult. If you are earning 2000 pounds per month, you can easily send you kid to university in the UK.

Even worse for the poor non bumi's not given a place in local university. Even if they can afford, they won't get a place because of the quota system. Unfortunately, the Chinaman and the Indian who gets 5A's in STPM have to be sacrificed and not given a place to let the Malay fellow with 2E's and 3 Fail's to enter the Medical Faculty or Law Faculty.

So the non-bumi's have to save RM100,000 per year to send their kid to the UK. In the UK, at least the white man still can go into university based on results and merit and only pay 3000 pounds per year.

  15. Luxuries

  16. Panasonic Plasma TV in Malaysia about RM20,000. If you are earning RM$2000 a month, memang mahal! You have to save 2 years your monthly salary to buy it. In UK, the same Panasonic ironically, Panasonic plasma is made in Japan and Japan is close to Malaysia, so the plasma should be cheaper in Malaysia) is only 2000 pounds. And this is only 10% of the 2000 pounds earned.

  17. Health

  18. NHS is free. Though the service is slow, quality is still there. You still can get a top quality by-pass for free although you may have to wait many months. In Malaysia, IJN charges RM$30,000. SJMC charges RM$50,000. GH is free but as many people know, GH and UH have clown doctors. For example doctors who wear tudung and use a pen to touch the patient because scared dosa).

  19. Assessments to local councils

  20. I may pay high council tax but at least my council assures my streets are clean and safe, got no holes (pot holes) on my roads, and they jump and attend to me whenever I call them. When I stayed in Malaysia, I paid my assessment and quite rent but MPSJ I lived in Subang) told me to "podah" whenever I asked them to come and fill up the pot holes, cut the long lalang, put street lighting etc. The councils, especially MPPJ and MPSJ, were more interested in eating nasi lemak and going for 10 teh tariks in a day during office hours and hardly did anything for their residents.

  21. Income Tax

  22. My national insurance and income tax also is not wasted. When I was unemployed in 1997, the government via social security paid for my 2-bedroom flat for one whole year and I was given about 100 pounds per week for me and my wife to live on. I am happy to know that one day if I lose my job, I can still claim social security and get my apartment paid and food to eat again for free. It is a good security to know.

The list goes on. Here alone you can see, the sterling you earn goes a long way in the UK. So your quality of life is far better in the UK than a Malaysian in Malaysia. It is just that Malaysians are just too content with what they have. But you compare apple for apple.

The British just love to complain. They have it made but still they love to complain. Nothing is good enough for the British. The government gives the citizens so much but they still seem to want more and more.

wanna a modelling contract?

The America's Next Top Model is back with its 5th installment!

It's not yet shown in Malaysia. Not sure when...

One thing I noticed is that most of them have Angelina-like lips.

Wonder who'll win this time...

I'm thinking... at this early stage, it'll be between Coryn, Kim (who happens to prefer girls over guys!), Kyle, Lisa, Nik and Sarah – in no particular order.

Ps: I thought Tyra's not gonna continue with this reality show anymore since she has her own talk show "Tyra". BTW, she did a mammogram in front of her audience and on the national tv, to prove to people that her "spotlights" are real! Sabar je kah....

No one's perfect

On the way to the office, in the commuter train, I looked at those pretty people and asked myself, "I wonder what their flaws are…?".

WORD UP!!!

I am blogging this entry via my Microsoft Word!

Just testing it out. See if it really works.

If it does, then, i would no longer have to worry about people walking by my workplace seeing that big BLOGSPOT logo on my computer screen!

Hurrah!

Update : unfortunately, I cannot use the symbol apostrophe from Word, as it will be translated into this->  IĆ¢€™

Ouch!

"An obese, 40-year-old woman from Stuart, FL, actually died last year after a six-hour effort to dislodge her from her couch failed. Authorities said the 480-pound woman's skin had actually become grafted to the cushions."

that was a paragraph taken from a Yahoo article today.

Lesson learned : better start watching my weights and eating healthy food and excersizing more from now on...

ps: I don't believe in Darwin's theory of evolution!

Tiada Lagi Indah
By Jaclyn Victor

malam meresap dingin sepi
kini dikau tiada menenmani hidupku
tiada lagi indah

kini mimpi-mimpi tak serupa
tanpa dikau disisi kekasih
mengusapi lenaku ini

hadirmu sementara
seketika cuma
pergimu selamanya

kemilauan cintamu
menyuluhi cintaku
asmaramu sebuah memori
abadi selamanya

keindahan kasihmu
menyinari kasihku
asmaramu hanyalah
tinggalan kenangan sedih sendu

kekasih tetap dalam hati
semoga kau tenang di sana sayang...

kemilauan asmaramu selamanya...

what news!!!

ps: I don't care how small your wedding reception is gonna be, YOU MUST INVITE US!!! ;P

what problem!

Money
by Pink Floyd
recently performed on Rockstar:INXS by J.D. Fortune

Money get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're o.k.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money get back
I'm all right jack keep your hands off of my stack
Money it's a hit
But don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're giving none away

who is it? who is it? who will be eliminated this time?

darn pc!!! hurry up!

and then there it was...

picture of dave giving a peck on the cheek to suzie "Suzie's Out After Six Strike"

phew! i've thought so... it was either her or MiG.

so, it's confirmed!

all boys for the final showdown!!!

the lead vocal for INXS would be a guy...

ur honest opinion appreciated

when u see someone who's holding a book that somewhat titled "clinically proven ways in finding bestfriend and finding true love" you might think:-
(1) this person has no bestfriends
(2) this person has bad experience with her/his bestfriends
(3) this person wants to be in love
(4) this person has difficulty finding true love
.
.
.

what else?

care to add?

but the thing is, why do you even need a book for such an abstract matter?

by the way, i love yesterday's Rockstar performances. Minus MiG's. All the songs rocks!!!

there can only be one!

i got a feeling that it's gonna be between Marty and JD in the end.

if you were to go to the site, you could see, even the voting result for the Best Rockstar:INXS Moments it's neck to neck between Marty's and JD's.

as for today's performance, both Marty and JD were requested by INXS to perform their original songs again. Personally I like JD's better as 'Pretty Vegas' is less 'pop-ish' than 'Tree'. Marty's 'Tree' reminds me of that "...sitting under a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G" song.

but then again, JD isn't always in his top form and in the previous episodes, INXS's praises mostly went to Marty...

VS.

so, no matter how dreadful for me to say this (simply bcoz I love JD), I think Marty's gonna win - on number of votes basis.

Rockstar : INXS - Episode 10 - Episode10 : THE SITDOWN
The band discusses each rocker. They all agree Suzie has the best voice, but Garry also notes that "JD has the most riveting personality." Garry also feels Marty has come a long way in that department too, and that Mig is unique. Basically, they're all qualified in their own way. Kirk quips, "We've got a tough job ahead of us." While Kirk raises Tim's concern about Suzie dealing with the media, Andrew feels that she'll cope with guidance. Andrew also remarks that he's not so sure JD is saying "what really he means or whether it's what he wants [us] to hear." Jon defends JD, saying he's just misunderstood.
Andrew counters, "When the cameras go away, and it's just us guys left with him,
who's going to stop him playing games with everybody?
" Garry in turn asks Andrew if he questions Mig and Marty's focus. Andrew admits he's concerned about Mig's strong theatrical background. Garry gives Mig props on his performances, but he's not sure it's natural. Jon comments, "Mig looks like a rock star, but is Mig a rock star?" As for Marty, Tim loves that he has spine, but he also feels JD's bad boy image brings them edge. Kirk agrees that JD has issues, but he can draw artistically on that. But in the end, the band still has no idea who'll it will be--it's anyone's game.

the first time

it was on Thursday, October 02, 2003 that I first decided to blog.

why?

at the time, cik li has just went to further her studies in Manchester. I thought what better way than thru blogging to keep her inform of what the rest of her friends here in Malaysia are doing... and it did achieve just that.

in about 2 weeks time this blog of mine will turn 2.

and what have i wrote so far?
rubbish mostly! hahahahha...

and what will i write in next 2 years?
hopefully more rubbish!!! hahahaha!

ps: tangan aku bau asam (hehehe!) pasal masa lunch makan cencaru bakar cicah kuah asam! nyum!!!

just came back

just got back from kuantan yesterday.
went there for co's treasure hunt.

somewhere on karak highway, saw a car from another co that was also having a hunt.
turns out to be my friend's, who's also my neighbour.
immediately called to confirm.
what a coincident!
also going to kuantan!!!

but due to time constraints we didn't get to hangout together.
liza also couldn't make it as she was really worn out from travelling outstation for the past 2 weeks.

well, maybe next time yeah?

well, look who decided to hunt as well...

still zombie-like

i'm still feeling the after-math of the dinner preparation.

i'm still feeling sleepy...

i'm basically dragging myself to work...

i can hear my bones 'crackling' with every slight moves i made...

i just need a very looong and good sleep...

ps: for the treasure hunt dinner this week, i thought of going as Pumba! heheheheh... i realised i had the Pumba cap which i bought during my trip to Euro Disney last year! heheheheh.... a-wim-bo-wab, a-wim-bo-wab, a-wim-bo-wab, a-wim-bo-wab u-eeeeeeee-weee-weeee-om-bom-bo-weyyyyyy...!

been a very hectic week!

and it'll be that way until the 18th...

i took leave on thursday and friday last week.

thursday i went clothes hunting at berjaya times square for my co's annual dinner, which was held saturday last.

saw some very lovely dresses but didn't buy it as they doesn't complement my 'figure' much! hahahaha! but, they were really lovely! if you have 'the body', i'd recommend you to buy them. one is by Pierce Fionda II in Debenhams and the other is in the Island Shop. They're quite cheap! Since I couldn't find anything I like, i wonder around Times Square going into those a bit Jinj shops. Amazingly I found a skirt - sort of like the one i was looking for - in an also a bit Jinj shop. I always thought, if we actually took the time to look around - even in the Jinj places - we might actually find something nice... so, i bought the skirt for rm100+.

on friday we, the lucky draw committee pIps, went on several shopping-spree sessions in Midvalley for the lucky draw prizes and ended up wrapping the gifts until 7.00am the next day.

Saturday, i managed to go home and get about 3-hours sleep before getting up again to go back for some more preparation at the dinner venue...

the place was quite big. needs to be as there'll be about 2500++ people attending. the decoration was so-so. instead of a garden, the klcc people made it look as if we were having the dinner in a middle of a highway in between two rows of limp-looking trees. I think last year's decoration in Sunway was much more inviting.

at 2pm, we did another last minute shopping for the top 5 prizes and had our lunch at kfc.

managed to get a glimpse of Anuar doing the sound check while changing to our dinner attires. then, went down to the counter to start giving away the door gifts as we did the years before...

the dinner itself was ok. this time i managed to taste most of the food served. but didn't have the time to truly enjoy it fully. doesn't matter. they weren't that nice anyway!

performance by anuar also was ok. however, there were a few moments when he was performing, when i thought to myself, "why does he reminds me of Micheal Jackson". what a turn off! what a pity! he's such a handsome man...

bla bla bla... the dinner went on... it finishes and we were back at the counter to give away the prizes for the lucky draw winners. as usual, they acted wild! macam orang giler!

by the time the prizes were given out, the counter looked as if it was hit by Katrina - no pun intended.

one thing i like about the dinner and being a committee is that sometime we get the opportunity to stay overnight at the hotel room, which were before this reserved for use by the performing artists.

so, me and another 2 slept over at Mandarin Oriental. I was looking forward to having breakfast there. Unfortunately, by the time we woke up and got ready, it was already 11.45am. well...

we had our brunch at Signature KLCC instead.

this would be the last time we'd be involved as the committee as after this a new committee would take over...

although it's tiring, we all have managed to have fun - everytime!

this week, we're having a Treasure Hunt competition from KL to Kuantan - I love Kuantan! And Cik Li, hope to see you there! We can have Mee Goreng Mamak at Taj! - from Saturday and Sunday. We'd be staying in Hyatt Teluk Chempedak.

On Saturday night we'd be having a dinner party to announce the winner. and the theme is 'Character From the Movie'. Some are already thinking of becoming Kassim Selamat - complete with the forks in the eyes. as for myself, I don't have any idea what to wear. It's not that I have to, but just for the fun of it. Can you guys suggests any? Nothing too revealing though. As I have mentioned before, I don't have the figure for anything tight or revealing... hahahahahah!!!

the weekend after that is our 2nd session Annual Dinner. We're organizing it for those who could not make it for the 1st session due to official business. We'd probably having it in Mandarin. Again the theme is floral...

so, i'd only be free when september ends..
.

ps: glenn and marcell are having a concert in Sunway Convention Centre on the 18th night. the tix are expensive! RM88, RM188 and RM248. Nak pergi!!!!! Tapi tak ada duit!!!!! UWAAAAARGHHHHHH!!!

"Mungkinkah kembali segala rasa yang t'lah hilang
Walau hati kecilmu masih mencintaiku
Tak ingin ku bertahan
Meski kadang mendendam
Akankah kau bahagia
Bila cinta tak ada untuk dirimu lagi
Apa yang kurasakan tak seperti kenyataan
Berbagi cinta selain diriku...
